It all started with a Christmas present. In December 2000, I was in my umpteenth year of practicing law when I received a gift certificate to a local culinary school as a Christmas present. I thought, "Gee, this might be fun." But of course I had no time to do anything fun like cooking -- I was an attorney. So, I put the gift certificate in a drawer and promptly forgot about it. By December 2001, I felt like I had earned a little R & R. While straightening up my office and pondering the concept of leisure time, I came across that gift certificate. To my horror I discovered that it was about to expire! With no time to think about the consequences of my actions, I picked up the phone and registered for the next 20-week class in pastry arts. And that, as they say, was the beginning of the end of my legal career.

Fast forward to 2003 and I find myself sitting in culinary school as a full time pastry arts student, firmly on the road to recovery from law. By then I had already fallen in love with chocolate and was making truffles for friends and family. It came as no surprise to anyone then that in 2005 I opened my chocolate shop -- Penny Chocolates.

WHO IS PENNY?
I get called Penny a lot. Not that I mind. I'll answer to anything that isn't derogatory. Actually, my name is Cheryl and I'm the pastry chef and chocolatier behind Penny Chocolates. The shop is named after my wonderful little long-haired Dachshund. In the beginning, when I was home playing with recipes, Penny was my constant companion and head cheerleader, giving me silent encouragement whenever I needed a little boost. These days she spends most of her time guarding the home front and chasing squirrels. But her picture hangs in the store, as a reminder of those early days.
